2001 was an awesome time to be in the market for a full-size European V8 performance-tuned luxobarge. Which of these four from that year would tempt you the most?
1. Jaguar XJR
2. Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG
3. Dinan 7
4. Audi S8
Admittedly, the Jag, Merc, and Audi are all factory offerings, and the BMW is an aftermarket upgrade...but competitive all the same. I do wish BMW had built an E38 M7, but Dinan did an excellent job picking up the slack!

Merc. At least you know the kind of pain you will be in for when it inevitably goes in for service at your local M-B emporium.
And that hurts. Because I’d really like the Jaaaaaaaaag. Just not the open ended repair bills on it.
Dinan 7 only if I had all the computer equipment to be able to diagnose a early ‘00s BMW. Which I don’t.
I make no comment about the Audi. (I think my feelings on early ‘00s VAG products are well known by this point)

THOSE ARE ALL MY WEAKNESSES
But I prefer the facelift S55 and the previous generation.
Jag is full yes
7 Series Dinan is meh, give me a Sport with M-Parallels
I nearly bought an S8 once.

I’ll take a 2001 740Li. Doesnt even have to be a Dinan or a 750Li.
I just want one on silver or blue.

I watched Ronin, so that S8 is my attainable dream car.

I have the same answer for the same reason.

Back then, they were called 740iL and 750iL. The “Li” designation didn’t come about until the E65.

Same here, but I also saw transporter and so I went with the D3 generation. But the D2 is sexy.
I might be a bit biased.

I’ll roll my dice with early W220 suspension to get a smooth and reliable powertrain.
Other tuners did the W220 as well, like Brabus:
And Lorinser:
Although I believe the latter was more appearance than mechanical.

Oh, every tuner got their hands on them. Brabus, Lorinser, Carlsson, RennTech, Kleemann. The list goes on and on.

I was thinking specifically early cars, too. As the decade went on and the car had its MY 2003 facelift, the cars got more gingerbread - I think these earlier ones (early tuned models like the ones above) look better. IIRC some of the Lorinser kits were especially flamboyant.

At that time my choice would’ve been: XJR, S8, 740, S55.
Today: XJR, S55, 740, S8.
That being said, I’m on the fence about whether I’d take the Audi or the BMW first, because Quattro and Ronin. And the main reason the S55 moved up is reliability, like fintail said, solid drivetrain.

I’m a BMW guy, so I am contractually obligated to pick the Dinan 7. I’m just here so I don’t get fined.
